Decorative artist Bryan Melillo and his partner Bruce Czopek have created classic movie poster-inspired artwork in an upscale Lake Tahoe residential home theater with Quiet Fiber® noise absorbing material. When Lake Tahoe Architect and Designer Craig Bonds designed the home theater in the private residence, he consulted with Jay Boland of Acoustiblok and determined that Quiet Fiber was the treatment he needed for the project. Bonds framed and hung four, 4 foot x 4 foot pieces of Quiet Fiber to provide the acoustic treatment desired within the space, while maintaining its minimalist design. Once hung, however, Bonds was less than thrilled with the bland result, which resembled “framed white paper.”

Bonds called in Melillo and Czopek, owners of Interior Art Design – MelilloCzopek Artisans in Reno, Nevada, to create some space-appropriate artwork with the already-framed acoustical material, and what they came up with surprised everyone: vivid movie poster-style pieces that add color and texture to the space, and reflect a bit of the homeowner’s taste in films, sketched and painted directly onto the Quiet Fiber – no canvass necessary.

“We wanted to be careful not to interfere with the acoustical properties of the Quiet Fiber, so we just used charcoal pencils, colored pencils and small amounts of acrylic paint to get the authentic movie poster look we were after,” Melillo said.

The artists also used tiny amounts of water with the colored pencils to create a bit of a water color effect in some places, with spot-on results.

“Bruce and I have never worked on a project like this before, so we approached it cautiously using mostly water-based mediums on the Quiet Fiber. It worked beautifully, and we are excited about the prospect of doing more of these for home theater spaces in the future.”

Quiet Fiber can be hung on any wall or hidden underneath curtains or tapestries, and on top of shelves or tabletops to provide noise absorption in spaces susceptible to reverberant noise. Child Health Pillar Vice-Chair Leith Greenslade, a private investor, announced a new partnership involving leading companies that have agreed to work with the public sector to end child diarrhea deaths in India by scaling up the supply and distribution of zinc and ORS. Ms. Greenslade also acknowledged the leadership of Canadian resource company Teck, which announced today a multi-million program to scale up the use of zinc and ORS to 2 million children in Senegal, and called on other mining companies to join the partnership. Partnerships will also be formed in other countries with high burdens of child diarrhea deaths with a global call of saving 1 million children by 2015.
Community Health Worker Pillar Chairman Jeff Walker, the former Chairman of CCMP Capital Advisors LLC, announced the publication of a breakthrough report on technology-enabled improvements to community health worker training programs, in partnership with the Barr Foundation, iHeed, the mHealth Alliance, and Dalberg Global Development Advisors. A key finding of this report is that multimedia applications with digital content and increased collaboration could potentially enable the training of one million new CHWs at less than a quarter of the cost of disseminating conventional training.

Bob always thought he would one day take over his grandparents’ dairy farm. Unfortunately by the time he finished his degree in Agriculture, they’d sold the farm. A new report from Planet Amazing says that organic flea treatments have many benefits that make them better than past chemical pesticides. Prior to 1995, the report says, most flea treatments used various poison chemicals to fight flea infestations, and to kill fleas. These chemicals had some serious problems because they were toxic to children, pets and plants. There was also a phenomenon called “resistance” that developed in insects where the fleas could withstand the poisons after many generations. “Resistance” means, according to scientific studies, that the insects can survive now after being treated with the same chemicals that – 20 years ago – would have killed them.

He says that no chemicals are used in the process, and that it is highly effective: “These micro crystals attach to the legs and bodies of bugs. When they groom it off, the crystals are like ground glass in the bugs intestines, shredding them from the inside out. Because of the microscopic size of the crystals, carpet dust is harmless to your family and pets.”
